The Broadway musical LOOK TO THE LILIES (1970) was based on “The Lilies of the Field.” Barrett died in Denver in 1986. His novels include “The Left Hand of God” (1951), which was made into a 1955 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Gene Tierney “The Shadows of the Images” (1953) “The First War Planes” (1960) “The Lilies of the Field” (1962), which was made into a 1963 film starring Sidney Poitier “The Fools of Time” (1963) “The Glory Tent” (1967), a sequel to “The Lilies of the Field” “The Wine and the Music” (1968), which was made into the film “Pieces of Dreams” (1970) “The Shape of Illusion” (1972) and “Lady of the Lotus” (1975), a biography of the wife of Buddha. Barrett is best known for his novels, many of which feature religious themes. He published seventeen collections of short stories, a biography of Francisco Solano Lopez, “Woman on Horseback” (1938) and a biography of Pope Paul VI, “Shepherd of Mankind” (1964).
